Problem and Solution (presents a problem and one or more solutions—signal words: a problem is, this led to, one solution). Compare and Contrast (shows similarities and differences—signal words: both, similarly, however, in contrast, unlike). Sequence/Chronological (events in time order—signal words: first, then, next, finally). Description (lists characteristics and examples—signal words: for example, one characteristic, another feature). Recognizing text structure helps you take better notes, write better summaries, and create effective graphic organizers.
