Economics studies how societies allocate scarce resources. Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem: unlimited wants meet limited resources, requiring choices. Opportunity cost is what you give up when you choose one option over another—the "real" cost of any decision. Markets coordinate production and consumption through prices: Supply (producers' willingness to produce at various prices), Demand (consumers' willingness to buy at various prices), Equilibrium (the price where quantity supplied equals quantity demanded). Price signals: when demand rises and supply stays constant, prices rise, incentivizing more production. Economic systems vary: Traditional (customs guide production), Market/Capitalist (private ownership, price mechanisms), Command/Socialist (government controls production), Mixed (blend of market and government). Macroeconomic indicators: GDP (total value of goods/services produced), unemployment rate, inflation rate. The business cycle describes recurring expansion, peak, recession, and recovery phases.
