Biodiversity—the variety of species in an ecosystem—increases stability: more species means more ways to recover from disruptions. Threats to ecosystems include habitat destruction, invasive species, climate change, pollution, and overexploitation. Ecological thinking requires understanding how change in one part of a system affects all others.
