Causes of World War II

World War I (1914–1918) resulted from interlocking alliances, nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Trench warfare, poison gas, and machine guns produced unprecedented casualties (17+ million dead). The Treaty of Versailles (1919) imposed harsh terms on Germany, contributing to economic crisis and resentment. The Great Depression, rise of fascism in Italy (Mussolini) and Nazism in Germany (Hitler), and Japanese militarism set the stage for World War II. WWII (1939–1945): Germany invaded Poland; Britain and France declared war. Germany conquered much of Europe; the Holocaust systematically murdered 6 million Jews and millions of others. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor (1941) brought the U.S. into the war. The Allies defeated Germany (May 1945) and Japan (August 1945, following atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki). WWII resulted in 70–85 million deaths, the founding of the United Nations, the Cold War, decolonization movements, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
