Culture encompasses the shared beliefs, values, practices, languages, arts, and institutions of a group of people. Cultural universals are practices found in all human societies: family structures, language, religious practices, art, tools, and trade. Ethnocentrism is judging another culture by your own standards—it leads to misunderstanding and prejudice. Cultural relativism is the approach of understanding a culture on its own terms before making judgments. Cultural diffusion is the spread of ideas, practices, and goods between cultures through trade, migration, conquest, and communication. Globalization has accelerated cultural exchange and created "global culture" (international brands, music, fashion) while also threatening local cultural diversity. Key sociological concepts: social norms (expected behaviors), social stratification (hierarchy), social mobility (movement between classes), socialization (learning to live in a society).
