Drama is literature written to be performed. Key elements: Acts and scenes (structural divisions), Stage directions (instructions for performance—lighting, movement, action), Dialogue (all plot, character, and theme revealed through what characters say), Soliloquy (a character speaks alone onstage, revealing inner thoughts), Aside (a character speaks to the audience without other characters hearing). Classical tragedy features a protagonist with a hamartia (tragic flaw) who falls from a high position, producing catharsis in the audience. Comedy resolves conflicts happily and often satirizes social norms. Analyzing drama requires reading dialogue for subtext—what characters mean vs. what they say—and imagining how it would look and sound in performance.
