Critical lenses: historical/biographical

This lesson focuses on critical lenses: historical/biographical. Effective communication is fundamental to academic and professional success.

Critical lenses are analytical frameworks for reading literature, each asking different questions. Formalist/New Critical lens: focus only on the text itself—structure, language, imagery, form—without biographical or historical context. Historical/Biographical lens: how does the author's life and historical period shape the work? Feminist lens: how does the work portray gender? Who holds power? Whose perspective is centered or silenced? Marxist lens: how does the work reflect class conflict, economic power, and exploitation? Postcolonial lens: how does the text portray colonized peoples, and what are the legacies of empire? There is no single "correct" lens—each reveals different aspects of a text. Using multiple lenses produces richer, more nuanced interpretation.
