Revision is rethinking and rewriting—it is distinct from proofreading (fixing errors). Effective revision strategies: Read aloud—your ear catches what your eye misses; awkward sentences, repetition, and unclear transitions become obvious. Reverse outline—after drafting, outline what you actually wrote (not what you planned to write). Does each paragraph have one clear point? Do the points connect logically? Macro-level revision first: argument strength, organization, evidence quality, thesis clarity. Then sentence-level: variety in sentence structure, precise word choice, transitions between ideas. Common revision targets: vague thesis, paragraphs without clear topic sentences, evidence without analysis, abrupt transitions, conclusions that merely restate. The best writers spend more time revising than drafting.
