The post-Cold War world brought new geopolitical challenges. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people and triggered the Global War on Terror: U.S.-led invasions of Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003). The Arab Spring (2010–12) was a wave of democratic protests across the Middle East and North Africa; outcomes varied dramatically from Tunisia's democratic transition to Syria's devastating civil war. Russia under Vladimir Putin reasserted global influence: 2008 war with Georgia, annexation of Crimea (2014), invasion of Ukraine (2022). China's economic and military rise has created new tensions with the U.S. and Western allies. International organizations: United Nations (peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, global cooperation), NATO (collective defense), World Trade Organization (international trade rules), International Monetary Fund (financial stability), World Health Organization (global health). Geopolitics studies how geography influences international relations and power. Current global challenges: climate change, nuclear proliferation, cybersecurity, pandemic preparedness, and global inequality require international cooperation.
