Worked examples
Model ItI do
Count the value of 2 quarters, 1 dime, and 1 nickel.
Start with the largest coins: 25 + 25 = 50 cents. Then add the dime, 50 + 10 = 60, and the nickel, 60 + 5 = 65. The total is 65 cents.
Try It TogetherWe do
Which is worth more: 3 dimes or 5 nickels?
Find each total. Three dimes are 10 + 10 + 10 = 30 cents. Five nickels are 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25 cents. So 3 dimes are worth more.
Now YouYou do
Count the value of 4 quarters.
Add the quarters one at a time. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
