Virginia SOL Math / Grade 2 / Probability & Statistics
Pictographs & Bar Graphs
What you'll learn
- Collect and organize data into a simple chart
- Represent data with pictographs and bar graphs
- Read and answer questions about a graph
Words to know
- Data —
- information you collect
- Pictograph —
- a graph that uses pictures to show amounts
- Bar graph —
- a graph that uses bars to show amounts
- Tally mark —
- a small line used to count
- Title —
- the name that tells what a graph is about
Why it matters Graphs turn a pile of counts into a picture, making it easy to see which is most and which is least.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
In a bar graph, the bar for cats reaches 6 and the bar for dogs reaches 4. Which pet is more popular?
The taller bar shows more. The cat bar reaches 6 and the dog bar reaches 4, and 6 is greater than 4, so cats are more popular.
Try It TogetherWe do
Using the same graph, how many more children chose cats than dogs?
Cats are 6 and dogs are 4. Subtract to compare: 6 - 4 = 2. So 2 more children chose cats than dogs.
Now YouYou do
If cats are 6 and dogs are 4, how many children chose a pet in all?
Add the two amounts together. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.

Warm-up
Ease in with the basics.
1.In a pictograph, if each picture stands for 1, how many do 3 pictures show?
2.A bar reaches 5. How many does it show?
3.Which is more: 8 votes or 2 votes?
On Level
The core Quick Check from the book.
1.In a pictograph, if each picture stands for 1, how many does 5 pictures show?
2.A bar reaches 7. How many does it show?
3.Red got 3 votes and blue got 8 votes. Which got more?
4.How many tally marks show the number 4?
5.Red is 3 and blue is 8. How many votes in all?
Challenge
Stretch your thinking.
1.Apples got 9 votes and grapes got 4 votes. How many more votes did apples get?
2.In a pictograph each picture stands for 2. How many does 4 pictures show?
3.Red got 7 votes, blue got 5 votes, and green got 6 votes. How many votes in all?
