3.NS.1

Place Value to Six Digits

What you'll learn

  • Read and write whole numbers up to six digits in standard, expanded, and word form
  • Name the place and the value of each digit
  • Compose and decompose numbers by place value

Words to know

Digit —
any of the symbols 0–9 used to write numbers
Place —
where a digit sits (ones, tens, hundreds, …)
Value —
what a digit is worth because of its place
Standard form —
a number written with digits, like 253,146
Expanded form —
a number shown as the sum of each place value

Why it matters Place value lets us read prices, populations, and distances correctly — the same digit means very different amounts depending on where it sits.

Worked examples

Model ItI do

Name the place and value of each digit in 253,146.

The 2 is in the hundred-thousands place, so its value is 200,000. The 5 is 50,000, the 3 is 3,000, the 1 is 100, the 4 is 40, and the 6 is 6. In expanded form: 200,000 + 50,000 + 3,000 + 100 + 40 + 6.

Try It TogetherWe do

Write 40,208 in word form and expanded form.

Word form: forty thousand, two hundred eight. Notice the tens place is 0, so we do not say any tens. Expanded form: 40,000 + 200 + 8.

Now YouYou do
