Virginia SOL Math / Grade 4 / Computation & Estimation
Add & Subtract Whole Numbers
What you'll learn
- Estimate sums and differences of multi-digit whole numbers
- Add and subtract using the standard algorithm
- Solve single-step and multistep problems in context
Words to know
- Sum —
- the answer to an addition problem
- Difference —
- the answer to a subtraction problem
- Estimate —
- a close, reasonable answer using rounding
- Regroup —
- trade 10 in one place for 1 in the next place
Why it matters Adding and subtracting larger numbers lets us total costs, track savings, and find how much is left over.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Estimate, then find 3,472 + 2,859.
Estimate first: 3,000 + 3,000 = 6,000. Now add exactly, regrouping as needed: 3,472 + 2,859 = 6,331. That is close to 6,000, so it is reasonable.
Try It TogetherWe do
A store had 4,200 pens and sold 1,675. How many are left?
This is subtraction: 4,200 - 1,675. Regroup and subtract to get 2,525. So 2,525 pens are left.
Now YouYou do
A trip is 1,250 miles one way. How many miles is the round trip?
A round trip goes there and back, so add the distance twice. Check your answer in the back.
