What you'll learn
- Recall multiplication and division facts through 12 x 12 with automaticity
- Multiply a two- or three-digit number by a one-digit number
- Divide with a one-digit divisor, including remainders
Words to know
- Factor —
- a number being multiplied
- Product —
- the answer to a multiplication problem
- Quotient —
- the answer to a division problem
- Divisor —
- the number you divide by
- Remainder —
- the amount left over after dividing
Why it matters Multiplication and division let us find totals of equal groups and share amounts fairly, from packing boxes to splitting a bill.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Find 8 x 12.
Break it apart: 8 x 10 = 80 and 8 x 2 = 16. Add the parts: 80 + 16 = 96. So 8 x 12 = 96.
Try It TogetherWe do
Find 234 x 3.
Multiply each place: 3 x 4 = 12 (write 2, carry 1), 3 x 3 = 9 plus 1 is 10 (write 0, carry 1), 3 x 2 = 6 plus 1 is 7. So 234 x 3 = 702.
Now YouYou do
Divide 47 by 5 and give the quotient and remainder.
Find the largest multiple of 5 that fits in 47, then find what is left over. Check your answer in the back.
