Virginia SOL Math / Grade 5 / Computation & Estimation
Multistep Whole-Number Problems
What you'll learn
- Solve multistep problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Interpret remainders in context
- Estimate to check that answers are reasonable
Words to know
- Multistep —
- needing more than one operation to solve
- Product —
- the answer to a multiplication problem
- Quotient —
- the answer to a division problem
- Remainder —
- the amount left over after dividing
- Estimate —
- a close, reasonable answer using rounding
Why it matters Real problems rarely use just one step, so planning which operations to use in order helps us reach the right answer.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
A store sells 4 boxes with 25 pens each. If 30 pens are sold, how many remain?
First multiply to find the total: 4 x 25 = 100 pens. Then subtract the pens sold: 100 - 30 = 70. So 70 pens remain.
Try It TogetherWe do
A bus holds 36 students. How many buses are needed for 150 students?
Divide 150 by 36 to get 4 with a remainder of 6. Those 6 extra students still need a bus, so we round up to 5 buses.
Now YouYou do
Tickets cost 8 dollars each. A class buys 32 tickets and pays with 300 dollars. How much change is returned?
Multiply to find the cost, then subtract from the amount paid. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.

1.Find 4 x 12.
2.Find 84 divided by 4.
3.A box holds 10 crayons. How many crayons are in 6 boxes?
On Level
The core Quick Check from the book.
1.Find 6 x 43.
2.Find 245 divided by 5.
3.A carton holds 12 eggs. How many eggs are in 15 cartons?
4.Divide 100 by 7. Write the quotient and remainder.
