- Denominator —
- the bottom number of a fraction
- Common denominator —
- the same bottom number for two fractions
- Mixed number —
- a whole number and a fraction together

Worked examples
Model ItI do
Find 1/4 + 1/2.
Rewrite 1/2 as 2/4 so the denominators match. Then add the numerators: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4.
Try It TogetherWe do
Find 1/3 of 12 by computing 12 x 1/3.
Multiplying by 1/3 means splitting 12 into 3 equal groups. Since 12 divided by 3 is 4, we get 12 x 1/3 = 4.
Now YouYou do
Find 5/6 - 1/3.
Rewrite 1/3 with a denominator of 6, then subtract the numerators. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
