Virginia SOL Math / Grade 5 / Measurement & Geometry
Perimeter, Area & Volume
What you'll learn
- Find the perimeter and area of rectangles and right triangles
- Find the volume of rectangular prisms
- Solve problems in context involving perimeter, area, and volume
Words to know
- Perimeter —
- the distance all the way around a shape
- Area —
- the number of square units that cover a flat shape
- Volume —
- the number of cubic units that fill a solid
- Right triangle —
- a triangle with one 90 degree angle
- Rectangular prism —
- a box-shaped solid with rectangular faces
Why it matters Builders and packers need perimeter, area, and volume to know how much fencing, flooring, or space they have.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Find the area of a rectangle 6 cm long and 4 cm wide.
Area of a rectangle is length times width. Multiply: 6 x 4 = 24, so the area is 24 square centimeters.
Try It TogetherWe do
Find the volume of a box 5 cm by 3 cm by 2 cm.
Volume of a rectangular prism is length times width times height. Multiply: 5 x 3 x 2 = 30, so the volume is 30 cubic centimeters.
Now YouYou do
Find the area of a right triangle with legs 8 cm and 6 cm.
Area of a triangle is one half times base times height. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
