Virginia SOL Math / Grade 6 / Computation & Estimation
Operations with Integers
What you'll learn
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers
- Solve single-step and multistep problems with integers
- Model integer operations on a number line
Words to know
- Integer —
- a whole number or its opposite, including 0
- Sum —
- the answer to an addition problem
- Difference —
- the answer to a subtraction problem
- Quotient —
- the answer to a division problem
- Sign —
- whether a number is positive or negative
Why it matters Bank balances, temperature changes, and score swings all move up and down, so operating with integers keeps track of the result.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Find -6 + 4.
Start at -6 on a number line and move 4 to the right, landing on -2. Adding a positive moves right, so -6 + 4 = -2.
Try It TogetherWe do
Find -3 times -5.
A negative times a negative gives a positive. Multiply the values: 3 times 5 = 15, so -3 times -5 = 15.
Now YouYou do
Find 8 - 12.
Subtracting a larger number gives a negative result; count down or add the opposite. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
