Comparing Objects

What you'll learn

  • Compare two objects by length and height
  • Compare two objects by weight and how much they hold
  • Use words like longer, shorter, heavier, and lighter

Words to know

Longer —
goes on for more length
Shorter —
goes on for less length
Taller —
goes up higher
Heavier —
weighs more
Holds more —
fits a bigger amount inside

Why it matters Comparing objects helps us pick the right size, like the taller cup that holds more juice or the shorter pencil.

Worked examples

Model ItI do

A pencil and a crayon lie side by side. The pencil is longer. Which is shorter?

Line up both ends at the start. The pencil reaches farther, so it is longer. That means the crayon is shorter.

Try It TogetherWe do

A rock and a feather are on a scale. The rock goes down. Which is heavier?

The side that goes down holds the heavier object. The rock goes down, so the rock is heavier and the feather is lighter.

Now YouYou do

A big jug and a small cup. Which one holds more water?

Think about which container is bigger inside. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
